Overview
The Livelihoods India Conference will be an annual event of two days. The diverse issues related to the challenges linked to sustainable livelihoods of the poor would be covered across the two days. Each year, the Conference will have a dedicated theme, to allow one issue to be dwelled upon and discussed in detail. Sectoral experts, innovators, practitioners as well as policy makers will be invited to share their experiences, build consensus and define the road map and strategies for providing sustainable livelihoods solutions to the poor.
The Livelihoods India Conference 2010 will be held on November 17-18, 2010 at Hotel InterContinental Eros, New Delhi. The over-arching theme for this year's Conference is "Agriculture based Livelihoods". In India, the livelihoods of almost 70% of the rural population depend on agriculture out of which nearly 80% are 'small and marginal' land holders. The current agriculture trends are not very encouraging, hence making the already challenged livelihoods of poor vulnerable. There are multiple challenges that the poor face like inadequate access to markets and resources, poor management of natural resources, unfavourable policies, etc. The two days of the Conference will deliberate on these issues, identifying underlying causes and propagating factors. In addition, discussions will also aim at devising solutions for these challenges such as the growing potential of agri-extension, the role of the private sector in agri-supply chains, up-scaling of best practices in agriculture, NREGP convergence with agriculture programmes, agro processing as an alternative livelihood opportunity, social restructuring and institutional models and the role social enterprises can play in supporting sustainable livelihoods.
